Most of the best games produced during the past five years have been sequels. That was also true of the best games produced for the PS3 in 2011. Several games released that year received constantly high ratings, and those with the highest ratings were sequels of previous successful games.
Below is a list of the top five games released for the PS3 in 2011.
Uncharted 3 is the third entry in a highly acclaimed series produced by the developer Naughty Dog. The game, like its predecessors, has amazing production value and puts the gamer in a position where he or she feels as if it were a movie. The brilliance of the set pieces and the script in general comes close to exceeding those of the previous games.
This game allows players to take a look at some events in protagonist Nathan Drake's past. This is a welcome part of the game, but the fact that the game reintroduces several of its main characters does not mean that it is the same old game produced before. In fact, one of the best parts of the game is its unpredictability.
LittleBigPlanet will remain one of the great PS3 games of all time. Released in 2008, the original is what is called a puzzle platformer video game, and its main draw was that it would be built around user-generated content. Media Molecule set the bar high for the second game in the series, which was released in January 2011.
The game features great creation tools and also supports content created for the first game. The presentation is outstanding, and the story mode is fun throughout. Most have concluded that the second installment actually exceeded the first.
Developer BioWare produced the first game in this series for the PC and Xbox 360 in 2007 but did not produce the game for the PS3. Because of this, some PS3 players were wary of buying this second edition of the game for the PS3 console. Electronic Arts released the Windows and Xbox 360 versions in 2010, and the game finally came out on PS3 in January 2011.
Those who did buy the game were not disappointed. This space combat game labeled either as an action role-playing game or as a shooterhas great presentation with an unusually good dialogue. The combat itself is outstanding, as the AI is superior to the first game.
Another puzzle-platform game for the PS3 made it into the top five. Developer Valve Corporation released Portal 2 for the PS3 and other systems in April 2011. The game has a feel of a shooter, but it is mostly a puzzle game. Players have to solve a series of challenging puzzles to progress through the game.
The writing in the game is excellent, and players almost universally loved the dark humor. Moreover, the game features an outstanding co-op mode that the original game lacked.
The top title of 2011 was yet another sequel. Rocksteady Studios produced the award-winning Batman: Arkham Asylum in 2009 and followed up with a sequel, Batman: Arkham Cityin 2011. The sequel featured a script written by comic book author Paul Dini, and many praised the new storyline.
The sequel is much larger than the original, featuring the sprawling landscape of Arkham City. It features much more open-ended gameplay and allows the player the ability to spend time exploring. The game also contains a great deal of content, which adds to the game's replay value.
